The writer attempts to offer a corrected view of what he perceives as a persistent anti-Ottoman, anti-Turkish bias about the Armenian issue of the period. The bulk of material used in this study has been drawn from British and American archival sources as well as the memoirs of nineteenth-century travellers, diplomats and missionaries. The extensive reliance on English sources means that Armenian views are not equally represented. The book focuses on the diplomats, missionaries and politicians whose interests and involvement created the Armenian question in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It deals with public opinion, and the religious and racial biases that were carried into any discussion of Ottoman affairs.
