The article examines Russian ecclesiastical diplomacy on Syria starting two decades ago and continuing until the beginning of the Arab Spring, and focuses on the relationship between the Russian state and the Russian Orthodox Church, with domestic and external repercussions. In Syria, the Russian Orthodox Church became a tool of genuine strategic influence, extending in many facets, including the military and that role is likely to continue.
