The aim of this book is to showcase the main religious minorities in the Middle East. To that effect, the book focuses on the Egyptian Copts, the Lebanon Maronites, the Christians of Pakistanm the Kurds of Turkey, the Berbers of Algerian, as well as the Bahai in Iran. As such the authors strive to accentuate both the different paths to gaining recognition of full citizenship within state societies as well as the original status quo stemming from the societal framework of the Ottoman Empire. The book illustrates the difficulty in the formation of a shared national identity and examines, case by case the factors which enables or failed to enable the assimilation of the minorities within society.
