The article examines the American mission in Ottoman Syria In light of the discrepancy between American missionary and Syrian Evangelical representations of Protestant history in Ottoman Syria, present day Syria and Lebanon. The writer focuses on the controversy between the Syrian Evangelical Church of Beirut and the American missionaries at the turn of the century and cites specific examples for the Syrian church’s challenges to American control.
